Spain: Courgette prices plummeting once again
ASAJA-Almeria has reported on the worrying situation for courgette producers this season. In addition to the problems caused by the New Delhi virus in the early stages of the campaign, they must also now deal with rock-bottom prices, barely surpassing the 0.12 Euro/kilo on average. This is 47% less than in February and 70% less than last year.
According to data accessed by ASAJA, supply volumes are larger at the moment, as in addition to Spain and Morocco, other countries like France and Italy are also competing. Furthermore, it is worth noting that Morocco's courgettes have entered Europe this winter with prices falling below the agreed legal minimum, dropping as low as 0.30 Euro/kilo.
"The campaign has been awful so far for courgette producers, and precisely now, when they are in most need to overcome this winter's bad results, prices have plummeted to levels as low as 0.08 Euro/kilo, which is unacceptable," states Francisco Vargas, president of ASAJA-Almeria.
ASAJA requested a reduction of the net yield index for these producers to compensate for their losses. It also addressed the need to enforce other measures that may contribute to solve this crisis, as carrying on with these prices and the current production costs is unsustainable. The Administration's collaboration is therefore essential.
