Schmidt warns discounters about residual prices

The price battle between the large food discounters in Germany is causing sharp criticism from German politics. The minister for Agriculture, Christian Schmidt, warned the chains about prices for left over meat, dairy products and vegetables. "The current price wars in the trade ignore the fact our high quality standards in meat, cheese and vegetables didn't happen by themselves," says Schmidt.

"Quality cannot be left over. We should be happy: food is still cheaper here than in neighbouring countries even without constantly dropping the prices," he continues. But Schmidt is against a legal regulation for certain food prices. "As a minister I can offer help choosing certain foods, for instance those with the animal protection label, which guarantee animal welfare. Or those with the regional label, which guarantees that the origin is a certain region. My goal is to make clear how many sources and how much effort and work goes into our food. The products are worth their cost."
