The Colombian Agricultural Instituteannounced the results of the avocado census conducted on 2,169 plots of land inMontes de María, with the goal of identifying the extent to which the crop hasbeen affected by avocado root rot.
The entity managed to ascertain thatthere are approximately 621,687 trees in the area, of which 285,597 (46%) arehealthy; 45,651 (7%) present symptoms of the disease, and another 290,439 (47%)are dead. The most affected areas by the disease are Carmen de Bolívar, SanJacinto and Ovejas.
ICA has implemented a mitigation planto tackle avocado root rot, which includes the setting up of 20 demonstrationplots, the organisation of 20 educational and communicational workshops and theprovision of resources to producers.
The general manager of ICA, Luis HumbertoMartínez Lacouture, stated that "all avocado producers should receive theresources and use them adequately, and those not in the census ought toregister to be able to receive the assistance the entity offers."
