"Organic market still growing, particularly outside the Euro zone"

"From the beginning of the winter season we have seen more demand for organic vegetables," explained commercial manager Richard Soepenberg from Frunet Bio. "The organic market is still growing and we see this throughout all Europe, but particularly in countries outside the Euro zone, such as Scandinavian countries and Switzerland. A clear sign that the Euro did have an impact on the crisis. The Spanish market still lags way behind."

Growth has resulted in higher sales in kilo's and above average sales prices. The average price lies around 15 to 20% higher than the same time last year. A positive development. Apparently the consumer is more aware of the benefits which organic food has to offer and are prepared to pay a little extra," continued Richard. "Frunet are also seeing a growth. Expectations for 2014 are high. We have customers all over Europe and an international team of people. With our own cultivation "cyclo largo" until mid July and more and more growers who wish Frunet to market their products, we should grow in 2014, that is our expectation."

It was extremely warm in Spain during September, which caused the plants to produce plenty of fruit. This, in combination with a short cold rainy period which they had, caused shortages with the smaller tomatoes, which led to higher prices. With other products, such as courgettes, where the beginning of the season was too short, we now have too many and lower prices because many growers re-planted and production is now in full swing."

"Apart from vegetables we have a positive feel for the Peruvian organic mango season. Together with our shipper in the Netherlands, we still had weekly arrivals in Rotterdam, from Peru, of the Kent mango. Prices are also higher than last season but in my opinion, they should have been higher and may have been if others had not been cheaper. Expectations for the Spanish organic mango season is to have a lot of extra fruit after the crop failure last season and that prices will be lower. Moreover, we will soon receive the first organic avocados from our shipping agent in Peru."

"Next to all the organic produce, we dedicated ourselves to importing ready to eat conventional pineapple from Costa Rica. This has been a resounding success, and we expect to continue to grow," concluded Richard.
