"Bodensee: Record turnover on topfruit thanks to smaller harvest"

Friedrichshafen - The fruit from the German region Bodensee, mainly apples, at the moment produces a good feeling for the growers in the area. After the harvest was 3,000 tonnes less than last year and a shortage of apples arose in all of Germany, growers are making a profit because of high prices. The average size costs up to Euro 1.77/kg and in season 2012/13 the region reached Euro 68 million in turnover, more than ever before.

"This turnover is not because of the quantity of apples, but is the result of the high prices" Herman Sommerfeld, chairman of the governing body of the association behind the hallmark "Obst vom Bodensee" (harvest from Bodensee) says.

The high prices result from a decrease in the apple harvest, 18 percent all over Germany. In the Bodensee area the decrease in harvest was between eight and ten percent, according to fruit experts.
