US (FL): Strawberry season gets underway

With production ramping up for the Florida strawberry season, the state's growers are reporting a normal start to this year's harvest.

“Harvest is just getting started, so we don't have a lot to go on right now,” said Bob Hinton of Hinton Farms Produce. “The timing for this season has been just about right.” He reported that some growers had to contend with disease problems from nursery plants, but despite a later start, those growers have been able to replace their plants and get on with harvesting. Though he noted that it's too early to say with any certainty, early indications point to a good season.

“Quality so far has been good thanks to excellent weather, and demand has been very good, with it exceeding supplies right now,” said Hinton. “But we're still just coming into volumes of fruit.” He reported that prices for strawberries have been near $19 per flat.
