EU: Spring onion season completed by Egyptian product

After a good season with Dutch spring onions grower Marcel Jacobs of Jacobs Groente from The Netherlands, started importing Egyptian spring onions two weeks ago. The Egyptian season runs to the end of April, resulting in Jacobs being the supplier of spring onions all year round. Jacobs' spring onions mainly end up at the cutting companies. The supply is taken care of by Verscombi from Eindhoven, The Netherlands. who specialize in semi-processed fruit and vegetable products.

The grower works with a local grower when importing Egyptian spring onions. According to Marcel the quality of the Egyptian spring onions is good and is just about equal to the Dutch product. "We do everything we can to guarantee the quality of the product. All spring onions are checked on a sorting belt and they are checked before going to the client. The demand is good at the moment, only clients will have to get used to the different price level of the imported spring onions."

Jacobs Groente can offer the spring onions cleaned without elastic band and roots. "We have bought a machine which removes the little head from the spring onions. For the cutting companies, removing the elastic bands can be a real chore. The fresh product can be added to the processed parcel in this way. If requested we can also offer spring onions in bundles."
