With less hail during this year's Washington apple season, supplies of apples from the state have been free of some of the quality issues that popped up last year.“Hail storms made for lower-grade fruit last year,” said Viva Tierra Organic's Addie Pobst. “But we didn't have that same sort of state-wide hail event this year, so there hasn't been as much hail-grade fruit on the market.” Viva Tierra Organic specializes in organic fruit from the Pacific Northwest, and Pobst mentioned that even though this year's organic apple haul will likely not be as big as last year's, that's says more about how big volumes were last year than anything else.
“Last year was a record-setting crop,” said Pobst, “and you usually don't get those two years in a row.” She described this year's crop as being more toward the norm, both in terms of the final output and in terms of growing conditions.
“We had a standard growing season,” said Pobst. “Frosts weren't early, hail wasn't an issue in the summer, it didn't get too hot or cold, so all the different parts were regular. Temperatures, first and last frosts, rainfall and weather systems – all of those things were just right.”
