Nicaragua: Banana production increases

Banana production in the January-July 2012-2013 period increased by 5.5%, 68,200 boxes, from 1,239,200 boxes in 2012 to 1,307,400 boxes in 2013, according to the latest report of the Central Bank of Nicaragua, BCN, on output indicators.

"In July alone, banana production amounted to 231,000 boxes, which means that there was an average annual growth of 16.6 %," states the official report.

However, while the production increased, revenues from this product's exports have declined by 13%, from U.S. $ 2.2 million between January and October 2012, to 1.9 million in the same period of 2013, according to the Centre for Export Processing, CETREX.

According to CETREX, this was due to a decline in the international prices of bananas, which went from $0.28 dollars per kilogram in 2012 to $0.23 per kilogram in 2013.
