Patrick Stoffels, BUD Holland:

"Over 400 products in stock"

BUD Holland is not the place to go for standard tomatoes and oranges. This was the answer to a client question at one of the nearby trading companies, but for exotic fruit and vegetables and specialties the company offers a range which is unparalleled. "We carry a range of about four hundred products which are always in stock," says seller Patrick Stoffels.

Red bananas, durian, jack fruit, physalis, horseradish etc. A tour of the warehouse and various cold rooms quickly displays the diverse assortment by the exotic importer. Besides exotic vegetables and fruit Bud Holland also offers a broad assortment of wild and cultivated mushrooms, soft fruit, mini vegetables, sea vegetables, fresh herbs and niche products. "We are one of the few fruit and vegetable trade companies who send out a supply list twice a week. We work with generally stable prices and the products have to be available all year round as much as possible. The turnover rate of the products is high. Only then can you ensure high quality."

"The majority of what we import travels by air. During the 70's Bud Holland were the first providers of Kiwi's. We still supply them but the numbers are not as large. We focus on particular food service wholesalers, regular wholesalers and supermarket chains. Our customers are located throughout West and Eastern Europe. Presently the interest is in super foods, such as goji berries and chaia seed is on the rise. We also sell a growing assortment from Thailand."

"The many cooking programmes on TV work well at introducing the general public to the uses for exotic produce. What is nice is the huge wow-factor whenever we show our assortment to customers. Which company has, for example, jack fruits, durian and guanabana's in stock?" asks an enthusiastic Patrick. "We also don't have a problem if our products are expensive. The 'fortune seekers' in our field are the first to step off if the financial risk is too great. Then it comes back to us," said Patrick.

Single Estate Coffee
A few years ago, BUD's first step outside of fruit and vegetables was into coffee. During that time the house brand, Single Estate Coffee, has fallen under the umbrella of BUD Holland and the company has a special climate controlled storage centre for the raw materials and their own hyper-modern coffee roasting facility. "Single Estate Coffee is actually similar to BUD. We aim for better coffee and this shows in the results: Last November we were named Dutch Champion in the Dutch Barista Championship," said Bas Burghoorn, who organises training for clients in the catering and business trade to experience this unique coffee.
