Italy: Good results for Bejo onions in Fucino area

It's assessment time in Fucino, a fertile plain in Abruzzo. It is the end of a season that has proven particularly demanding for producers, though final results were good.

Bejo Italia, a leading company in the hybrid onion seed sector, has been promoting and developing a cooperation with the most important companies in Fucino for a few years. In this area there are good conditions to produce excellent quality onions.

Evening conferences, demo fields and meetings with producer companies enabled the development of a prestigious know-how cooperation that allowed Fucino to become an emerging area in the last few years.

Moondance F1, Red Rum F1 and Red Bull F1 have become the strong points of the yellow and red onion programmes.

Thanks to its excellent skin and compactness, bright and deep colour and a high dry matter content, Moodance F1 has become the most popular variety in the onion programme.

Red Bull F1 and Red Rum F1 are extraordinarily bright and have deep colours. They have been appreciated by producers mostly because of their uniformity, skin and health.

At the same time, other tests were carried out with hybrid white varieties, and the results were excellent.

The high demand of the last few years led many retailers in Central Italy to consider the Funcino area as a great opportunity. Its fresh and fertile land is ideal to consolidate onion production.

Choosing the variety according to light and climate conditions is fundamental in obtaining high quality produce. In addition, suitable agronomic techniques will favour harvesting ripe bulbs with a long shelf life.

Bejo Italia strongly believes in a cooperation between all operators. During Bejo Zaden's Open Days in the Netherlands, Bejo Italia invited some cultivators and retailers from Fucino so they could learn about production and stocking techniques in the country, with visits to some leading companies in the North of Holland.

Bejo Italia wishes to introduce itself to producers during the next meetings in order to exchange ideas and develop various activities to improve the business.

Bejo Italia would like to invite producers and operators to contact the Technical service in order to talk about the experiences of every single area so as to devise the perfect calendar for the Bejo varieties.
