La Misenate

Italy: Open field and greenhouse chicory soon

La Misenate cooperative, specialised in the cultivation of different chicory, salad, strawberry and asparagus varieties, was founded in 1996 by a number of producers from Naples, among which were the D'Andrea brothers who, after many years in the industry, felt the need to join forces with others to better meet the needs of their clients.

In the last few years, La Misenate has grown stronger and laid the foundations for a quick development in the sale of its own products. Brothers Esposito Ciro and Antonio D'Andrea preside over the cooperative thanks to their experience.

The company is located on 25 hectares, 15 of which are covered. Integrated control is used to maintain a low environmental impact.

The leading product is chicory, also known as dark green Grumolo, which is cultivated almost the whole year round. "Throughout the years, the care and attention for all productive processes meant we could complete the whole chain from cultivation to harvesting, packaging and distribution. Rocket and asparagus are also very important for the company," explains Antonio D'Andrea.

"We have two 1,000 sq m warehouses to process products, we can rely on qualified personnel and suitable equipment to supply any client in a very short time."

The productive cycle is divided into two: in autumn and winter we produce vegetables like chicory, spinach, salad and asparagus, whereas in spring we go on with strawberries and green beans. "We will start harvesting chicory in a few weeks' time: 10 hectares of open fields and greenhouses. Then we will start with spinach, rocket and salad."

The productive calendar starts in November with chicory and spinach and ends in May with strawberries. In winter, La Misenate sells chicory in Northern Italy and abroad to both markets and fresh-cut companies. The same goes for rocket and spinach. In the summer, all the attention is dedicated to strawberries and green beans.

"Luckily this year there were no problems during the productive cycle. Yields were excellent and the weather contributed as summer rain is ideal for our crops. Little has changed since last year as regards consumption, it was the final price which did."

Antonio reveals how the most important challenge in such a period is to keep supplying high quality products despite lower margins.

"Among our future plans there is the construction of a fresh-cut plant. We already have agreements with some leading companies and we could become the base for Southern Italy."

The Cooperative has a Facebook profile and, as regards social networks, Antonio says that "I can say that Facebook was useful, as many companies contacted us through our page and thanks to what we posted on other pages."
