Spain: Citrus production increases to 3.2 million tonnes

The agricultural union Asaja offered its first impressions on the development of the fair Vegetal World; an event aiming to concentrate top quality produce for its international distribution.

In the statement, it is assured that citrus fruits are among those presenting the greatest potential, including the lemons from la Vega Baja (Alicante), whose production volumes continue to increase, according to data from the Valencian Council of Agriculture. In fact, this trend is followed by most citrus fruits, which have experienced a general 8% growth this year, with an expected production of 3.2 million tonnes in the Region.

Regarding lemon production volumes, the increase should be around 3.3%, reaching 207,000 tonnes, and will particularly apply to the Verna variety. On the other side of the scale, the production of mandarins, especially those of the Marisol variety, remains at 1.3 million tonnes. Oranges also increased to 1.6 million tonnes (+19%). In any case, Asaja reminds us that the campaign has only just started.
