The heavy rains, which affected the flowering, and the hailstorms that took place in late August, have resulted in a considerable reduction of the yield per hectare, as well as in smaller calibres than usual. Although, on the positive side, this will lead to more stable prices than in previous campaigns, as according to Bruno Crabé, commercial manager of Frutas Rafael Manzano e Hijos S.L., "it is a product whose prices generally plunge when production volumes peak."
"We have been shipping this product to the domestic and European export markets for fifteen days, with smooth sales, both to supermarkets and wholesalers. We still believe that to ensure the future of cherimoyas it is paramount to expand its sales in Spain, not only because of its consumer culture, but also because the fruit arrives in better conditions after a shorter journey," explains Bruno Crabé.
Furthermore, mango prices are skyrocketing due to the severe lack of supply, something which occasionally has an effect on sales. But this will probably change in future campaigns. "If no adverse weather conditions arrive next year, mangoes will flood the market, as a lot has been planted in the past two years."
