Fruit conflict between Chile and Peru

Peruvian Guilds revealed that their country's government, via Senasa, Peru's equivalent to SAG, would place into effect the required methyl bromide fumigation of Chilean apples.

In practice, the spraying of this fruit involves closing the market.

The measure is a response to the intention of restricting the entrance of Peruvian avocado due to the presence of the sunblotch virus.

The leaders of the neighbouring country's agricultural exporters say that if the restriction to avocados is maintained, they would respond by having greater demands for Chilean table grapes, pears and kiwis.

Meanwhile, at the SAG, they say that, "there have been reports on possible restrictions of other Chilean fruits. We are making all the corresponding efforts and expect that the technical discussions come to a successful conclusion soon."
