Over the past decade, pomegranate consumption has gained in popularity worldwide as a result of their recognised healthy properties and high antioxidant content.

The fruit sector became aware of this trend, resulting in an increase in its cultivation all over the world. Its global production is estimated to have surpassed the 2.6 million tonnes.

These statements were made by Federico Bordi, Commercial Manager of the company Tikagroup, which is currently working on several projects related to the crop in Argentina.

Tikagroup has been promoting pomegranate cultivation in this country since 2009. Currently, there are more than 1,200 hectares planted and in production.

With its activities, the company aims to boost the production of fruit that will be highly demanded and profitable worldwide. It also tries to obtain processed sub-products that can be distributed both in the domestic and the international market.

Tikagroup is the firm that pioneered the large scale production of pomegranates in Argentina. The main varieties cultivated are the Wonderful and Acco, which besides other exclusive varieties, are grown in the nursery of Formosa. There are commercial plantations in Salta, with 320 hectares; Córdoba, with 311 hectares; San Juan, with 400; Entre Ríos, 39; Misiones, 5 and Santiago del Estero, with 35 hectares.
