UK: Leading supplier of fresh-cut herbs partners with Bee Happy
As part of R&G’s holistic approach to farming, and in accordance with its sustainable farming principles, the company has established an apiary on an area of land rich with wild borage and Summer flowers – believed to be especially popular with foraging bees, and an excellent source for delicious honey.
Bees collect pollen, nectar and water to feed themselves and their larvae. By doing so they pollinate fruit, flowers, vegetables and crops. Bee pollination is responsible for more than $15 billion in increased crop value each year (Source: USDA); but the global population is in sharp decline.
Dean Fowler, R&G’s Commercial Manager, said: “While R&G has substantial UK farming interests, the company also imports premium fresh cut herbs from around the globe. We believe that dedicating land to such a worthwhile cause underlines our commitment to environmentally responsible farming and counters links in our supply chain, such as dry, arid environments where biodiversity is less likely.”
Fowler added: “Bees have to travel increasingly long distances to forage, this is our way of contributing towards turning the tide in the sharp decline of the UK bee population.”
