"Danny Aerts: "Demand for weekend deliveries increased"

Ekotrax and Interim Cargo offer conditioned fruit and vegetable transport

Logistic service provider's Ekotrax and Interim Cargo are situated at the auction premises in Sint-Katelijne-Waver since January 2013. Danny Aerts and Koen Dirckx have been the business managers for these organisations for years. Ekotrax specialises in conditioned transportation and handling of goods for the fruit and vegetable industry and the flower and plant industry. Interim Cargo is a rental company that rents out refrigerated trailers, isothermal trailers, Danish trolleys, and parking. Interim Cargo also offers a truck wash in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. Both companies offer a complete logistical package.

On top of trading
"We have more possibilities than ever before, now that we are located on the auction premises. We are right on top of trading. Everything comes straight here and can be checked on the spot. Our customers in the fruit and vegetable industry are mainly supermarket chains, exporters and other traders. We take care of everything for Belgian garden centres in the plant industry. The most exciting element of the fruit and vegetable industry is that you almost never know what's coming. Every day is different. We make sure that we deliver everything as quickly as possible to our customers."

Weekend deliveries
"We've built up a solid customer base over the years. We really appreciate our relations. Our main goal is to grow together with our customers. We are flexible in our response to their demands and we are available 24/7, because everything is under our own management. It should be pointed out that demand for weekend shipping and weekend deliveries has increased. More and more supermarkets are requesting it. Carrefour and Edeka are our largest 'supermarket customers'. It required the necessary investments in systems, but we get a satisfied customer in return. When they buy something at auction today, it will be on location in Germany tomorrow."

Traceable
Danny Aerts says that most vehicles are traceable through a track & trace system. "We have a fleet of 15 of our own trucks and 10 people are permanently subcontracted. We recently invested in Volvo trucks that meet the Euro 6 standards. Our main transport destinations are the Benelux, Germany and Northern France. The fleet is constantly renewed and maintained. Our transport is conducted according to the International Featured Standards (IFS). This makes it possible to accurately inform our customers on the status of their cargo.  All of our refrigerated trailers are equipped with a temperature data logger, which records temperature variations during the trip. The latest new systems allow for immediate follow-up, using a GPRS connection. We own our own parking lot near the auction premises for the last few years. This is under constant camera surveillance."

Crisis
It's noticeable that the industry had a difficult time in the last few years, according to Danny. "We are very dependent on the market, therefore we're keeping a close eye on it. We notice immediately if anything changes. The merger of auctions also influences our transport. Certain shifts are happening right now and cargo gets more centralised." Danny indicates he prefers working with companies that conduct their business properly. "It's all about mutual respect and companies with established values are valuable. This disappears with certain companies when trade isn't going well and envy plays its part. Work remains enjoyable when there's a good rapport."

Interim Cargo
"A catering company is our largest customer as far as truck rental is concerned. They rent refrigerated trucks to deliver their products to several festivals. We help out often when companies don't have enough trucks themselves during busy periods for the fruit and vegetable industry."
