Germany: Unusual start to potato year

In Germany, sales of the 2012 potato harvest are finished. The period from now to the time of the new harvest has to be bridged - and that is not easy this Spring, according to website Gabot.de.

The lively demand all over Europe and smaller harvests in the traditional supply countries of early potatoes caused limited quantities at a high price in Germany. Because of the late Spring and the wet circumstances the supply of potatoes will remain small in many German regions during the coming weeks. Firm peel early German potatoes will probably only be available in larger quantities for the foodstuff trade at the end of June. That is clearly later than other years.
