Meade Potato Company wins Best Agri-business award

Meade Potato Company, one of Ireland’s leading growers, packers and distributors of quality, fresh produce to the retail market, has won the Ulster Bank Business Achievers Award for Best Agri-Business in Ireland. With a record number of 592 entries for the Business Achievers Awards across all categories, the judges stated that Meade Potato Company stood out as a thriving producer in the agricultural supply chain. They cited the company’s impressive turnover, strong sustainability and family business track record as major factors in their decision.

Since this time last year, Meade Potato Company’s workforce has grown from 150 to 200 employees due to increased business; they anticipate a further 50 will be employed indirectly to carry out expansion plans and sustainability initiatives. New state of the art production lines are being added at their Meath base to enhance capacity. Installation of a wind turbine has also begun, which will provide 80% of their energy needs with clean, renewable energy and will help them with their goal of achieving maximum sustainability.

Accepting the award at the Mansion House in Dublin on May 30, Philip Meade Jr. commented, “Our growth as a company would not have been possible without the hard work of our dedicated team of employees and fellow growers. The weather made it a truly testing past year for farmers, but the skill and tenacity demonstrated in dealing with it has been a credit to Irish agriculture.” The company is currently seeking new growers to join their team, both within Ireland and abroad; overseas suppliers are especially needed to meet demand for their fresh fruit and salad lines.

In addition to increasing awareness of the Meade Potato Company brand, the company hopes the Best Agri-Business Award will provide greater visibility for their work in the areas of waste prevention and healthy eating.
