Fruits de Carthage host third Friend's Day
Several new varieties brought from Europe and California are currently grown in the fields of Fruits de Carthage, which are located in a highly favorable area for apricot and early plum production.
As a matter of fact, apricot trees have grown in Tunisia for over 3000 years. Along with figs and dates, apricots are part of traditional Winter desserts. Flavored and refreshing, apricots are one of the easiest fruits to taste - fresh as well as cooked.
Tunisia is the natural cradle of apricots, especially in warm areas such as the Sahel. The main production area remains the center of Tunisia, especially in Kairouan, famous for export-oriented varieties.
There is a wide range of varieties in Fruits de Carthage. In fact, there are nineteen varieties, ten of which are early, five seasonal and four known as late varieties. The later ones last throughout the Summer, from mid-April to the end of August. However, the most common are seven early varieties, among which Mogador, Carthage Cot and Colorado are the most frequently grown by the company. One of their characteristics is that they are closely linked to a region of production. Production of early fruit represents 80% of the total production of home the Fruits de Carthage Company.
Besides Europe, which is a traditional market, Tunisian apricots are also exported to Gulf countries.
