In the 2013/2014 season

Brazil: Estimated orange production 328 million boxes from Sao Paulo

The commercial production of oranges in the State of Sao Paulo (Brazil) for the 2013/2014 season is estimated at 328 million boxes of 40.8 kilos. Estimates are that 16.2 million boxes can be either lost or of a low economic expression.

The figures are from the first harvest survey, conducted by the National Supply Company (Conab), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture of the State of São Paulo, the largest domestic producer (70%), and published Monday in Brasilia. It also includes the production of the Triangulo Mineiro, the third largest producer of Brazil.

The reasons for the losses of the State of São Paulo are due to economic factors (64%), weather (40%), plant protection (34%) and inadequate fertilization (15%). Juice processing industries will use 85% (279,100 million cases) of the production and the rest (48.7 million boxes) will go to the market of fresh produce; whose percentages (15%) are similar to those obtained in 2011/2012. The average productivity is 660 boxes per acre.

CitrusBR estimates the harvest will be 268,350 million boxes.

The second estimate of the harvest done by the National Association of Exporters of Citrus Juices (CitrusBR), points to a production of 268,350 million boxes of oranges for the season 2013/2014. Completed data show that the past 2012/2013 harvest, ended with a total production of 385,393,000 boxes of oranges.

The numbers show a reduction of 117 million boxes when compared to the last period. Of this total, 21.7 million are derived from the number of plants and 95 million because of climatic factors and the effect of biannual character, aggravated by two consecutive large harvests.
