Shortage especially for organic potatoes

Switzerland imports 6,000 tonnes of extra potatoes

Due to failing vegetation as a result of the wet and cold weather in Switzerland, it has become apparent that the potato stores will not be enough to supply the market until the time that the new harvest arrives. This is why import has become necessary, especially when it comes to organic potatoes.

Despite the fact that the old supplies are a bit above the average, this will not be enough for a good transfer to the new harvest. The result of a bad harvest of organic potatoes in 2012 means that it will not be possible to meet the increasing demands domestically. Now that the new harvest has been delayed, the import of waxy potatoes has become crucial.

Vegetation is now approximately three weeks behind as a result of the wet and cold weather. That is why Swisspatat has decided to import 6,000 tonnes of extra potatoes. This applies to the period up to and between the 6th of May to the 21st of June 2013. Swisspatat has emphasised that domestic potatoes which are available will receive priority within the trade.
