US: Idaho Potato Commission wins international trade dispute

Idaho has emerged successful in an international trade dispute with a Turkish company relating to the use of the term "Idaho."

The Turkish Patent Institute's Office has announced that it rejected an application from the company Beta Ziraat to trademark the word Idaho. This would enable the company to see the term in the branding of produce - including potatoes, the US state's most famous product.

The Idaho Potato Commission challenged the move, despite assurances from Beta Ziraat that it did not plan on marketing potatoes.

Beta Ziraat has two months to appeal the decision. But in the meantime, Idaho potato authorities aren't taking any chances. They've filed for a trademark in Turkey on the phrase "Famous Idaho Potatoes."
