The first truck with real spring harvest of Malta potatoes arrived at potato wholesaler Altena in Wijk and Aalburg. Altena imports the product from Malta in collaboration with Raphaël Scerry. "We're almost a month earlier than usual, and this is good for sales, as a large volume of new potatoes arrives from Malta every year," says Kees Schouten.
The new potatoes that Altena has received are of the Anais variety and a very limited volume of the Santé variety. At the start of next week the next load will arrive. According to Kees Schouten the growers in Malta have had a good harvest and the potatoes are reasonably coarse.
"The prices of the old potatoes are good, so I expect a good market for these new Malta potatoes. The retailers are always very interested in new potatoes, but all the Dutch retailers will also start to receive Malta potatoes next week," says Kees.
