On the morning of January 15, 2013, on the Ionian coast of Sicily, intense hail hit lemon and berries. During the morning, hailstorms also reached other areas.

The damage will be estimated in the next few days, but most affected were oranges, especially blood oranges, fennel and vegetable production such as potatoes in the field and tomatoes, peppers and zucchini in plastic tunnels.

The hail hammered almost all plastic greenhouses, and in some cases damaged whole structures. Damage to the plastic film layer may result in costs of approximately € 20,000 in small to medium businesses (15,000 m²). The hail lasted half an hour.

Hail and wind have also affected southern Calabria. The squall-line storm did not spare even the Salento, in Puglia.
