Forward or improve fruit or vegetable ripening process is always in the mind of the
agrotechnological industry. Therefore, researchers from the University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia, have developed a new method to encapsulate the ethylene gas in a powder in small amounts. It can be used to ripen fruit that is in transit.
The RipeStuff ™ (brand under which UniQuest Pty Ltd is working with, will market the product) it was tested in late 2011, when it researchers used less than 100 grams of the product to control ripening of 20 tons of mangoes during a journey of three days between Darwin and Adelaide (4000 km) in South Australia. These mangoes were ready for the market 6 days earlier than those who did not ripen on the trip.
According to reports by UniQuest the use of this technology has four advantages: The first is that the fruit is ready faster to be marketed in the market. This is in addition to improving overall product quality, decreases costs and producers can supply fruit directly to retails.
