The National Committee Sistema Producto Melón wants the Mexican government to implement the "the mirror law" with fruit from the United States, to prevent the entry of contaminated units like it happened during 2012.
This year the entry of Cantaloupe from California, Arizona and New Mexico, was stopped. Thus making it possible to commercialize more than 462,000 tons of fruit that was produced in the country.
The president of Sistema Producto Melón in the country, Jorge Luis Huerta, pointed out that for the first time it was possible for Mexican health authorities to prevent the indiscriminate entry of this fruit which threatened the health of Mexicans. It is estimated that about 300 tons entered daily.
He said the challenge now will be to lift the ban to export melons to neighboring country because of the salmonella that was found in the fruit produced in Michoacán 10 years ago and that still remains in force. This is a situation that has hurt producers with the possibility of placing the product.
