UK: Plans for 23 ha greenhouse that uses residual heat

A Suffolk tomato producer, which is capable of producing around 10 percent of Britain’s tomatoes, has unveiled a plan to use heat produced by a neighbouring incinerator to produce its fruit. The scheme, called Sterling Suffolk, was thought up by resource management and recycling firm SITA UK. SITA is working to develop an incinerator in Great Blakenham, Suffolk, with growers Stephen Wright and Michael Blakenham.

The project involves creating giant greenhouses that will be heated using unwanted energy let off from the incinerator. The greenhouses are set to cover 50 acres – around 23 hectares – and will produce around 7,500 tonnes of the fruit each year.
