Argentina: Apple volumes down

According to estimates by the Association of Producers and Exporters of Fresh Fruits from Mendoza (Aspeff), Argentina has 400 million kilos of apples less. In provinces like Rio Negro and Neuquén are about to eliminate 60% of their crops, because they could not reach the quality required by the market, while in Mendoza there is a deficit of over 200 million kilos in production.

Within this scenario, the support given for the popular calingastinas apples, has also decreased considerably and there are few prospects for a significant upturn in the supply.

At the initiative of producers and government support, Mendoza has undertaken an ambitious plan that seeks to extend the area for this fruit; 5,000 hectares are to be planted. This new area has a production forecast of 200 million kilos in ten years. Thus, covering half of domestic demand and reorganizing the provincial deficit.

Not only is the productive capacity of apples targeted but also ensuring throughout the year, a source of work that this fruit industry is able to offer, for example in stores. A measure that will definitely earn revenue and can be applied in other cases is agricultural production.
