US: FDA suspends registration to food-processing plant

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently published the first registration suspension for a food-processing plant, as covered in section 102 of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

In its website, the Administration points out that "to protect the public health, FDA has suspended the registration to Sunland Inc., a nuts and seeds producer. This is the first case in which FDA's authorities rule for a suspension of registration under section 102 of FSMA."

The measure was decreed on Monday 26 November and was motivated by the spread of salmonella to almost 41 people after consuming organic peanut butter produced by Sunland. This has also entailed the call for the retirement of 240 products containing organic peanut butter during the last two months.
