Germany: Aldi Süd growing, Aldi Nord ailing

Aldi Süd has grown in 2011 - as was reported by Aldi Süd. There is a reason for the normally silent food discounter to speak about its turnover development. The German trade magazine 'Lebensmittel Zeitung' recently reported decreases in turnover for Aldi Süd.

"The year 2011 was a very successful year, with an increase in turnover of 4.4 percent and very profitable," the company recently said when asked by the German new agency DPA. Aldi Süd is responding to a report in 'Lebenmittel Zeitung'. The magazine reported, referencing twelve regional balances published so far, a decline in profit for Aldi Süd in 2011.

According to 'Lebensmittel Zeitung' discounter Aldi Nord had a slump in results in the German market. Especially the weak sales of non food products and higher purchasing prices caused problems in the company's balance.

The balances published up until now of 18 of the 35 regional Aldi Nord supermarkets in total, show slightly increased turnovers, but the results were well under the level of the past years, 'Lebensmittel Zeitung' reported. Aldi Nord refused to comment on the media report last Friday. The company traditionally doesn't reveal corporate figures.
