Canary Isles banana:

"Spain: The EC grants Protected Geographical Indication "Plátano de Canarias"

The Official Journal of the European Union has published the single administrative document for the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Plátano de Canarias", which is the first step to obtaining this quality seal, possibly in mid-2013, that will grant "Plátano de Canarias" a specific identification to protect it against fraud.

Asprocan reported in a statement that it was "a truly important step" for the sector. The original application was issued by Asprocan in January 2010 at the Canarian Institute of Food Quality (ICCA); institution which helped in the elaboration of the dossier which was presented at the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs for the granting of temporary national protection.

The PGI "Plátano de Canarias" is used to refer to the Cavendish variety of the "Musa acuminata Colla" species, grown in the Canary Islands and intended for fresh consumption. A defined geographical area has also been established, limited to the agricultural lands in the Archipelago located 500 metres above sea level.

Plantains produced in the Canary Islands under these conditions have a characteristic flavour due to their composition: high sugar levels and low in starch. Additionally, their characteristic richness in aromatic compounds gives them an intense aroma and their high enzyme activity their distinctive black spots.

All these aspects give "Plátano de Canarias" clearly distinguishable physical, chemical and organoleptic qualities which are appreciated by consumers. The application for recognition is based on the reputation of the product.

This quality seal will act as support for Canarian plantains, favouring differentiation, guaranteeing the product's unique characteristics, traceability for consumers and strengthening their identity.

At the moment "Plátano de Canarias" has a temporary protection granted by the Spanish government, prior to the obtaining of the European quality seal.
