Germany: Growers have difficulties selling kale

Kale is largely unknown in Germany. To growers in the north of the country however, the vegetable is an important source of income. 1,100 hectare is devoted to the crop, half of which is in Lower Saxony. Kale is a seasonal crop, selling almost exclusively between November and February. Nevertheless, the price is under pressure. German growers are ever forced to come up with ways to make a profit.

The Brandt family has opened up a café, with a shop next door. During the winter months patrons can eat kale soup, boiled kale and buy kale fresh from the land.
