French apples command high prices
“Prices for apples are up to 30 percent higher than they were a year ago,” said Nathalie Casal, commercial manager for Distrimex. “I haven't seen prices like these in 20 years." The cause for the spike has been much lower production than in previous years, and it's gotten to the point that it's hard for suppliers to meet demand.
“It's really complicated for us this year due to the lack of production in all areas,” said Casal. “Prices are very high and we're not able to satisfy all our customers.” Since Distrimex exports 90 percent of their produce out of France, the effects of the shortage will most definitely be felt throughout Europe and beyond.
“We just hope that our customers will be able to absorb the situation,” said Casal. “This kind of thing happens about once every 20 years.”
