The announcement by the Mexican Secretariat of Economy (SE) on the reduction, or even disappearance, of tariffs in the next 5 years is raising concerns among growers and livestock farmers, as there appears to be no clear reason for this measure.
He added that they are studying its potential impact and having talks with the National Agricultural Council (CNA) to decide what to do.
"It happened very recently and for us it is still unclear what consequences this measure will have, but many sectors are affected. We are in talks with CNA to decide whether we take any joint action," Crivelli pointed out.
Juan Carlos Anaya, director of the Agricultural Markets Consulting Group (GCMA), said that the SE's decision was hasty and did not take the opinion of producers and sector members in due consideration, especially regarding sensitive products, such as beans or coffee.
"It is remarkable that just 5 days before the end of the current administration measures like this are taken, especially when we are dealing with something as sensitive as food," said the expert.
