Goiás producers optimistic

Brazil: Pineapple prices up

Growers in Goiás, Brasil are optimistic about the pineapple harvest. Demands are up and prices keep rising now that the harvest is commencing.

The different varieties head for different markets. The big pineapple goes to São Paulo, the medium-sized will be sold on regional markets and the little ones will be marketed during the holidays. The community of Jaragua in the center of Goiás has the country’s largest acreage dedicated to the crop: 1800 ha. Average production is around 25,000 pieces of fruit per hectare.

The abundance of pineapple this season is the result of evolving prices in the last couple of years. According to IBGE the Goiás region harvested 56 million pieces. Estimates for this year are 102 million. In the Jaragua region the harvest ends in February 2013.
