Egyptian season kicks off at Kohl Fruit Trading

At Kohl Fruit Trading the Egyptian season has kicked off again. "We started quietly during the last weeks and are now at 'full swing' with the season. At the moment we have cherry tomatoes, strawberries and spring onions from Egypt in the assortment," Geoffry Kohl says. "It is clear that plantings of fruit and vegetables in Egypt are growing at a rapid rate. In the past a product such as mangoes was only meant for the local market, but we are now already testing these and I expect mangoes to become an export product within a few years just as citrus is."

Kohl Fruit expect about the same volume of Egyptian product as last season. "The weather conditions were good. As a result of the small differences between day and night temperatures the citrus coloured later, however, and as a result the season started somewhat later," Geoffery says. "The supply of strawberries is still quiet and prices are at a reasonably good level."

"The cherry tomato season started well," the importer continues. "The European season of spring onions was reasonably long and as a result sales of the Egyptian spring onions are not easy. I expect this to improve from the end of this or the start of next week. Also for peppers the season still has to really start." In addition to the Egyptian selection, Kohl Fruit Trading have, like last year, hot peppers from Uganda in the assortment. "These sold well during the whole summer. Supply is not as good now, but from December I expect better volumes again."
