Netherlands: Turbulent tomato market

The market for tomatoes and especially tomatoes on the vine is in a boisterous phase at the moment. "There are as far as the Dutch traditional cultivation is concerned both ethrel and non-ethrel treated tomatoes on the vine. We also have the autumn cultivation and also cultivation under light in the Netherlands. Prices are very different, from 45 cents/kg. for the last ones ehtrel treated to up to 90-95 cents for under light cultivation," explains a trader.

"In addition Spain is slowly getting there with tomatoes on the vine. Because there the price decreased by 3 Euro per kg. within three weeks, clients are changing to these import countries as well. The demand is certainly not spectacular, but there are sales" the tomato seller continues.

"Based on the last few years the traditional Dutch cultivation should fetch about
Euro 1.00/kg on 1 December. Now the price is a lot lower than that, but all indications are that next week could be good again with the prices. It could become a somewhat nice and a turbulent year as well. But pre-calculations often are wrong calculations and results from the past are no guarantee for the future!"
