Vietnam: Larger export of dragonfruit

In the first three trimesters of the current fiscal year, Vietnam has exported 226,000 tonnes of dragonfruit, for a total of 93 million Euro. Taken over the whole year, this is an increase of 78.3% in volume and 93.7% in profit. The same kind of increase is visible on other markets that export dragonfruit, such as China (107% in volume and 176.5% in profit), Canada (105% and 99%), Japan (14% and 36%) and Thailand (13% and 30%).

In the economically developed countries such as the United States, Japan, Canada and most European countries, the price for the fruit is higher than the world average. Outside the traditional market, the dragonfruit is sold in Chile, Brunei and Greenland. For Vietnam the export of the dragonfruit should increase in the coming years, when the markets of South Korea and Taiwan open again after a period of closure. The United States market has also become more attractive for the export now that the authorities have allowed fruit from Thailand, the Indies and Vietnam to be let through.

The Vietnamese export of fruit and vegetables in general is enjoying an increase. In the first three trimesters of the current fiscal year the export has raised over 378 million Euro. According to the latest statistics, this is an increase of 13.5% over the year. China is the primary customers, with 29.5% of the national export. 7.6% goes to Japan and 5.3% goes to the US.
