Ecuador: MAGAP fines three banana companies

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP) sanctioned with more than USD 4.8 million, three banana exporting companies for defaulting payments to fruit producers.

According to MAGAPĀ“s report, the company Sedordinsa S.A. was fined USD 29,172 for failing to pay producer Emilio Landires, 204 banana boxes.

Gropagro S.A was also sanctioned for not paying 33,501 banana boxes. Altogether the company must pay USD 4,790,641.

Finally the Law regarding new banana planting was applied to Megabanana, which must pay a fine of USD 27,706.92.

MAGAP authorities noted that controls remain "in order to avoid abuses that were committed against fruit producers."
