The idea for the creation of this centre happened in the framework of the twinning agreement between Cuba and Venezuela; alliance which greatly facilitated the provision of technical and specialised advice and high-end equipment and materials for the construction of the greenhouses.
The greenhouses project at a national level, within this same framework, is led by the National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA), which assigned the 12 production greenhouses and the one for seedlings to Bolivar's Regional Institute for Technology and Agricultural Development (Irtab); an institution under Bolivar state's government.
The 12 greenhouses will produce tomato, pepper, cucumber, courgette, aubergine, chive, coriander and parsley, with a capacity of 700,000 kilos per year, while the seedlings greenhouse will annually produce a million seedlings for tomato, pepper, lettuce, courgette, cucumber, aubergine, passion fruit and papaya, among others.
