Spain: Carrefour presents awards to local firms

The firm Patatas Fritas El Cántabro and the orujo liquor producer Sierra del Oso were presented yesterday with the awards which Carrefour awards its providers in Cantabria, Spain, as voted by its customers in the region.

Cantabria's president, Ignacio Diego, and Carrefour's head in Spain, Rafael Arias-Salgado, presided over the awards ceremony, in which Diego confirmed that the regional government will maintain its aid policies to help boost the agri-food sector and create jobs.

Patatas Fritas El Cántabro, founded in 1985, was presented the award for best small agri-food firm of the region, which was collected by Francisco José Olazábal. For his part, Ángel Moreno, of Sierra del Oso, was awarded the prize for most innovative firm, which is presented for the first time this year.

Both were chosen by customers of the firms participating in Cantabria's local produce exhibition, organised by Carrefour in the region.

The retailer's president stressed how important local produce is for Carrefour, which last year held business with 187 local firms, buying products valued at 80 million Euro.

He also mentioned other key factors for the distribution sector, including value for money, which has gained relevance in the current economic climate.
