"Responsibility with the quality of products shipped is essential"

Spain (Murcia): Clemenules campaign with slightly better prices

The Clemenules clementine campaign started recently in Murcia, and unlike in Valencia and Castelllon, it happened without delays.

"It is true that the Clemenules suffered delays this year, especially in the area of Valencia and Castellon. Here in Murcia everything runs within schedule," affirms Marcel de Koning, of Molinense Producciones Naturales, S.L.

This firm owns 2,100 hectares for production in Molina de Segura, Murcia, in a privileged place in terms of climate, with average temperatures of 19 degrees Celsius and 3,200 yearly hours of sunshine.

This year, Valencia and Castellon will see a 20% reduction in production; however, "in Murcia our production volume will not be affected," says Marcel. The quality is good, the fruit is healthy and the latest rains will help improve sizes." Nevertheless, Marcel warns that "it is important for producers and exporters to be responsible with the quality of the products they ship to keep demand at satisfactory levels, especially during rainy periods."

Regarding prices, it seems they are rising a little compared to last year's bad season.

"Prices are slightly better than last year, which is necessary if Spain wants to continue exporting citrus. For growers to make any profit out of their produce they need a minimum of € 0.30 per kilo with every calibre. Taking warehouse costs into account, the starting price should not go below € 0.65 per kilo," explains Marcel.

The Naveline campaign has started with small calibres and low prices, although Marcel is optimistic. "We hope it will recover during the next few weeks."

Molinense exports to every country in Europe, England, Central Europe, the Arab countries, the United States, Canada and Asia with its main brand "CHIRIPA".
