The sales of sprouts are very decent this season. “The price for A-sprouts is around a Euro this week,” according to Leo Kleijwegt of the Dutch Cooperative Growers Union. “A few industry agreements have pulled the price down a bit, but not much. Both B and D sizes are between 50 and 55 cents, so no complaints from me.”
The grower thinks the good market is due to a relatively high demand for sprouts. “Scotland and the US are ordering them by the trainloads. Last year we couldn't sell them a single sprout. So expectations for the rest of the season are quite high.”
Leo: “There isn't less crop this year, but many growers have sold more because of the prices. That made a hole, causing shortages. It would be nice if growers remembered this next year, so we don’t have shiploads of sprouts flooding the market!”
