Kristha Heibrink. Kwekery LOF:

"Netherlands: "Chicory prices increased somewhat again because of export"

At the end of 2010, Jan and Inge de Vries from Espel started a new chicory nursery with eleven modern cultivation cells for the production of chicory and red chicory (radicchio). Chicory nursery LOF has a weekly capacity of 3 cells. That is about 45,000 kg of fresh heads weekly. From November 2010 the nursery has controled its own sales. Clients are retail-service providers, wholesalers, exporters, hotels and restaurants and fruit and vegetable specialists.

Sales woman Kristha Heibrink says that chicory prices are increasing somewhat again.

"Chicory is getting a little more in demand again, mainly the demand from export countries is the reason for this. At the moment the price is about 90/95 cents. Actually we do not export a lot ourselves, but supply chicory and red chicory to exporters, who distribute the product all over the world. It is favourable for the sales of chicory that the weather is getting colder, people will eat more chicory then. Every week our cells are empty and this is sometimes more difficult to achieve during the summer months.

Sales of red chicory have been good all year, according to Kristha. "This week we started with the new red chicory, but also the old product sold well. If a client has a special wish for sorting or packing then nursery LOF will assist. Prices may be day-price, week-price or season. We look for clients, who are willing to order in time, so that we know for which client the chicory is and in which sorting and packing. Advance sales make things run smoothly in the company and in this way every customer can be served in accordance with his own requirements."

Witlofkwekerij LOF supply chicory and red chicory amongst others in 5kg EPS boxes of 3 and 5kg and in flowpack of 300 and 500gr. "We are strongly in favour of uniform product in the packing. Therefore not just weight," Kristha says. According to the sales woman, the Dutch chicory consumption is reasonably stable, but the older consumers are mainly the biggest chicory eaters.
