Changing margins German organic companies
The turnovers of organic fruit and vegetable growers in Germany have developed differently during 2011. This as mentioned on the German website Gabot.de. Whilst the turnover of vegetable growers decreased by 2.6% compared to 2010, the turnover of apple growers increased by 7%. This is the result of a good harvest for apple growers and stable prices for organic apples.
The growing areas of organic vegetables and organic fruit have been extended further, as per the actual figures of the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI). The area in use for organic apple cultivation has increased by 3.1% to 3,200 HA. That is about ten percent of the total area in Germany. The area in use for organic vegetable cultivation increased by 3.6% to 11,300 HA compared to 2010. Although the turnovers of vegetable growers nevertheless decreased slightly, this is, according to people in the know, the result of the decrease in growers prices for many vegetable varieties. Also the EHEC-crisis of June 2011 caused the demand to decrease, although not as much as with the conventional vegetable cultivation.
The most important vegetable variety in the organic cultivation is still the carrot. The carrot area remained just about the same at 1,550 HA. After the carrots organic asparagus (740 HA) and organic onions (400 HA) follow at a large distance as most important vegetable varieties.
