Italy: 650,000 Euro fraud for false citrus processing

A fraud at the expense of European Community, worth 650,000 Euro, was discovered by anti-fraud authorities in the Gioia Tauro Plain (Calabria region, Italy). This regards illegal EU funding destined for citrus processing.

A producer from San Ferdinando (in the province of Reggio Calabria), owner also of some farms in Sicily, was prosecuted for fictitious declaration of a cultivated area covering 78 hectares (which does not exist), false contracts proving the false existence of the this area and lack of documentation about product movements. In particular, the grower has never given any volume of Sicilian oranges, as he declared, to agricultural cooperatives and processors in the Gioia Tauro Plain.

Bank accounts and real estate of the grower were confiscated to a value of 350,000 Euro.
