Menno Molenaar, Van Oers United:

Netherlands: “Prices of sprouts double because of low supplies”

The last couple of weeks have been good to the sprout market. “We have had a good run,” says Menno Molenaar of Van Oers United. “Low supply doubled the prices. These we really need by the way, to meet our expenses.”

“The export is very decent as well. Last year the UK was as dry as a Martini, but now demands are good. We don’t expect the markets to flood in the coming weeks, so we are confident about the winter season."

Niche products, such as purple or mild sprouts remain but a small segment. “Purple sprouts are available in small quantities. In my estimate, most consumers go for the classic varieties this year.”
