Jan de Vries of Javri Fruit: “Prices won’t rise for more than 5 cents”

Netherlands: Tension on top fruit market

Tensions run high on the top fruit market. According to Jan de Vries of Javri Fruit this is because supply and demand are not well co-ordinated. “Growers are sitting on their produce and are waiting for prices to go up. In the top fruit industry, things peak once every season. It’s either in October or January. Well, it wasn’t in October, so growers are now holding back. But things don’t look rosy. Look, the Belgians did all right for themselves: they answered demands by supplying a million kilos. Maybe they were paid a little less, but at least they sold.”

Jan doesn’t really expect the prices to go up any more. “Prices won’t go up for more than 5 cents. The Conference is doing well; they fetch 80-85 cents. Mid price for the Comice pear is 90 cents. Elstar does between 70 and 90 cents, depending on size. Jonagold and Golden hover between 50 and 70 cents, also depending on size and class.”
